Such a Busy Week at Children 1st @ Acorns Upper Tean
So much can happen in a week at Children 1st nurseries and to illustrate this, here’s an overview of some of this week’s highlights at Acorns.
The children have really enjoyed their woodwork activities with Mr Peter, unscrewing and screwing door handles, door knobs and other interesting objects. The children have learnt about safety whilst using the tools, how to use different equipment, for example, the vice on the woodwork bench. We have used different types of language such as magnetic, tighten and unscrew.
We discovered a wasp’s nest in our outdoor play area. The children watched the video of the nest and were fascinated to see a piece of the nest that Rob, the pest control man, saved for us. They were able to see the larvae moving and how the nest was structured inside. We spoke about the honeycomb shape and how it is layered, and how this makes it very, very strong. Did you know the honeycomb shape is the strongest shape to build with?
Over the last few months we have been watching the birds nest and helping them grow by feeding them, with our homemade bird feeders. Once we knew that the birds had fledged we got the nest boxes down and had a look at them. We talked about the different materials that were used to build the nests, and also if the nests looked the same (which they did). We then looked in the bird books to try and identify what type of birds had nested in them by comparing the feathers that we had found in the nest. We also spoke about the size of the birds that could nest in the size of boxes that we have. We went on to find out about the life cycle of the birds.
Outside we had to devise a plan to get water from the tap across to our fabulous new digging pit. The children and staff worked together holding drain pipes and using other various objects. The children had to think about the flow of the water and solve the problems of the water tipping out, pipes not being long enough or short enough and how they could balance them. We got there in the end and had more fun in the digging pit.
And, as if this wasn’t enough, we’ve been investigating the weight of different natural objects trying to get the scales to balance. The children thought about which objects would be heavier or lighter than each other and then tried to find out the answer by weighing them.
We hope you enjoy looking through the photographs showing highlights of our busy week.
