Sun Safety Messages from Children 1st @ Plumtree
We need sunlight to keep us in good health but as our early years at Plumtree have been finding out we can have too much of a good thing. In talking about the weather we found ourselves wanting to know about UV levels.
The children showed their good knowledge of sun safety measures, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, shade and the need to drink water but as you’d expect given their age, the concept of UV levels was new to them. Indeed, until the recent climate changes, probably not many adults were aware of their significance!
The children found out that the UV index ranges from 0 (minimal risk) to 11+ (very high risk) and understood that the higher the number, the higher the risk. At the highest level the recommendation is that we should stay indoors between 10am and 4pm when UV radiation is at its strongest. As parts of the UK recently reached record high levels of 9, it’s good to raise children’s awareness of this.
