Kinetic Sand at Children 1st @ Oakwood, Derby
The Early Years at Oakwood were invited to use one of our new materials, kinetic sand which has an unusual property that allows the sand to be moulded like dough into shapes and, as it falls apart moves slowly, hence the name ‘kinetic sand.’
The theme of the activity was based on the children’s interest of baking. It followed on from a real baking activity that the children had really enjoyed and that we wanted to extend. What better way to introduce kinetic sand!
The ‘baking’ activity developed throughout the week. It quickly became the ‘go to’ activity of choice every session! The hands-on experience sparked lots of curiosity, engagement and conversations around different textures, feelings, letter sounds and numbers. The children’s imaginations were full of ideas for the wonderful meals they were making and the ingredients they were using.
Kinetic sand is something that can be made at home with dry sand, corn flour and soapy water. Why not have a go?
