It’s a Bug’s Life at Children 1st @ Acorns Upper Tean
Bugs are fascinating! We decided to find out more about these tiny creatures by going on a bug hunt in the nursery grounds so we could observe them closely before returning them safely to their natural habitat.
We all managed to put on our waterproof suits and wellies with little or no help at all. Then we ventured outside on a big hunt to look for bugs. We turned over rocks, tree stumps and bricks which are great hiding places for all sorts of bugs as they are cold and damp.
It was a little tricky to catch some of the bugs as they moved so quickly. The beetle made a quick getaway, the slower moving bugs were easier to catch. As we collected the bugs we put them into our bug pots so that they were safe. We emptied out our pots onto the tuff spot and discovered we had found slugs worms, and woodlice.
We watched how they moved and decided that the worms and slugs were very slow and that the woodlice were very quick. We think that is because they have got 14 legs! We already knew that beetles were speedy as they moved so quickly and we couldn’t catch them. Miss Claire said they have got 6 legs. We observed the bugs using our magnifying glasses to make them easier to see. When we had finished looking at our new friends, we released them back into their natural habitat and went into the barn to draw the bugs that we had found.
We carried on with our investigations in the barn, exploring the bug hotel tuff spot, and using the playdough to make patterns on the playdough mats.
We had lots of questions and are looking forward to finding out more about the bugs that are in our garden and field.
