World Bee Day at Children 1st @ Grantham and Oakwood
Bees are so important to the health of our planet that they have their own special day.
World Bee Day takes place on 20 May each year, and its aim is to spread awareness of the significance of bees.
At Grantham, the children celebrated World Bee Day by learning some interesting facts about bees, how they play a vital role in providing food for us all and about how the number of bees is in decline.
The children enjoyed exploring the scented yellow and black play dough on the tuff spot where they were able to create their own bees. We added some small world figures to the play dough where the children used mathematical skills to recognise their numbers, count how many bees there were and talk about which was the bigger number and which was the smallest number.
We added pipettes and tweezers so the children could suck up the different scents and squeeze it out onto their dough. Then we spoke about what it smelt like. One child used the small world bees as his pets and that he was feeding them honey.
Outside we spotted the bees who were visiting the flowers in our garden.
The children enjoyed dressing up in colourful clothes to resemble bright and beautiful flowers. They loved eating some delicious honey sandwiches which they prepared all by themselves for snack time.
