All About Life Cycles at Children 1st @ Toton
Hens, butterflies and tadpoles have taken centre stage at Toton over the past few weeks as the Early Years have been finding out about life cycles in the animal kingdom.
The caterpillars arrived a few weeks ago and the children had the opportunity to observe how they grew and grew before becoming cocoons. The cocoons have now been moved safely into their nets ready for the next stage of emerging into butterflies.
The children were also interested to see the frogspawn when it arrived in the nursery and are now excited to see all the tadpoles swimming around the tank. The children now all love visiting the tank daily to observe the tadpoles and cannot wait for them to turn into froglets and then frogs. Some children made their own illustrated book about the lifecycle of a frog to share at home.
More excitement was caused by the arrival of Miss Michelle’s two hens, Violet and Belle. The children all revelled in the opportunity to get close to them, learn all about them and even give them a cuddle. Violet was particularly fond of the children and even began to fall asleep when some of the children were stroking her. The children have also been very interested to see different types and colours of eggs.
Please note, all ‘Defra’ regulations have been adhered to throughout the hens’ visits.
