Animal Antics at Children 1st @ Acorns Upper Tean
We’re delighted to welcome some very special new arrivals to our nursery. Our baby rabbits have had the children in raptures! They are French Lop Siamese mix, and they are eleven weeks old. The nursery council have named them, after some debate, Peter, Jeremy, Nutkin (Nutty), Benjamin and Twinkleberry (Twinkle). These are all names from Beatrix Potter stories.
The children have learned to be quiet and gentle when looking at the rabbits and that they need to wash their hands after touching them. We have also been talking about how we care for them, what they eat and how the rabbits need fresh water and clean bedding.
We have also had Giant African snails come to visit thanks to John, one of our children. We have looked at their spiral shells, watched how they move and observed the trails they make. We’ve also talked about what they eat and how to care for them.
Another of our children, Johnny, brought in some chicken eggs, as one of them was unusually large. We talked about its size and shape and also what we would find inside when we cracked it open. There was a double yolk in the large one. After doing some research we found that the largest egg in the world records was approximately 31cm, as recorded in 1896.
