Around the World in Five Days at Children 1st @ Toton

Imagine experiencing a grand tour of the world in just five days!  The children at Toton went on their lightning journey around the world learning about different countries and their cultures.

The children found out about famous landmarks from a variety of pictures and learnt more information about the country in which it was located. The children paid careful attention to the detail and the shape of the building and then set about creating their chosen landmarks through junk modelling. This involved selecting recycled materials which resembled the shape of the building and experimenting with ways of joining the materials together. The children also recreated landmarks using various construction toys and measured their buildings. The end results were amazing, and we now have a very impressive 3D display in our entrance hall!

The children enjoyed other creative activities such as painting flags, making mehndi patterns on their hands and crafting African necklaces. They even had fun packing and dressing-up for a variety of holiday destinations.

More dressing-up took place on our ‘Around the World Day’ when the children brought in holiday photos for circle time ‘show and tell.’ The ‘Dragon from Krakow’ Poland was very popular. This special story all about a dragon is written in Polish which Miss Gosia our nursery nurse from Poland translated for us all. She taught us a little bit of Polish along the way too.

Our world tour continued with a discussion of Indian dress wear and some of the children showed us traditional Indian dance moves. Then we were off to Scotland where we talked about the Scottish kilt. We looked at special postcards from relatives in Mauritius and spoke about the now extinct flightless bird, the Dodo, which used to live on the island.

Next stop was the U.K. where looked at camping holidays, then over to Paris for a visit to Disneyland and finally China, sharing photos from one of children who started nursery in China before moving to our nursery!

The children have learned so much by embracing different cultures and we feel like we certainly have travelled across the globe in five exciting days!

Thank-you to all our families who helped to make our journey around the world so successful. We hope you enjoy looking at our holiday snaps!
