Fluttering Butterflies at Children 1st @ Newark Town
It’s just under a month since the postman delivered a lovely surprise for our Early Years, a jar of wriggling caterpillars!
Since then, the children have been finding out about the lifecycle of butterflies and closely observing the changes that have happened to the caterpillars. Our caterpillars turned out to be real eating machines, just like the one in ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ story by Eric Carle.
After so much food the caterpillars turned into chrysalis and then the children waited very patiently for the first butterfly to appear. This was a truly magical experience for the children to witness.
All too soon it was time to say farewell to our butterflies and release them into the big wide world. The children were very gentle when opening the net and watched and waited calmly as the butterflies began to fly away out of the net.
Some of the butterflies wanted to say ‘Hello’ and sat on our hands. We watched closely and saw their pretty colours as the flew away to lay their eggs on a leaf and begin the lifecycle all over again!
