Squashy, Immersive Experiences at Children 1st @ Leicester

Some of the early years children at Leicester enjoyed a trip with a difference to De Monfort University, where they took part in an interactive session lead by the theatre company, ‘Turned on its Head’. 

The children began the session by using different movements to balance and create shapes with their bodies.  Then the sponge fun began and it was time for the children to squeeze, pop and roll through a range of spongey experiences. The children started off by exploring one sponge, gripping it and squeezing it to see how it felt. Then they discovered the different ways the sponge could be bent and moved.

Then, to everyone’s amazement, more and more sponges of different colours and textures were added. 

The children were encouraged to build towers, feel textures and have sponge fights and to see how they can use this every day object in different ways. Some even buried themselves in the lovely soft sponges!

The day was enjoyed by children and adults alike. The experience gave the staff plenty of ideas to try at nursery. As for the children, they haven’t stopped talking about the sponge fun day since!
