Super Science Week at Children 1st @ Toton
What a super Science Week the young scientists enjoyed at Toton. Here are just a few highlights of their activities:
Designing and making egg parachutes: The children selected the materials they would like for their parachute, drew a picture of what they would like it to look like and then constructed the parachute using their ideas. They practised dropping their parachute with a foil egg so they could see whether any alterations needed to be made to their design. Once they were ready for launch, they made their way to the bridge where they took it in turns to release their parachute. Amazingly not one egg broke!
A raincloud in a cup: The children poured water into one cup which represented the sky. Then they squirted foam on top of the water (sky) and the foam represented the clouds in the sky. The children were given another cup filled with blue coloured water to represent the rain which they pipetted on top of the cloud. Eventually the cloud became full and heavy, and the blue rainwater seeped through the cloud which burst causing it to ‘rain’!
Finding out about dissolving: The ‘Skittles’ experiment was a firm favourite. After carefully arranging the Skittles in a circle on a plate and adding warm water to the centre, the children sat back and watched the magic happen. The coloured sugar coating slowly dissolved and spread through the water to make an amazing Skittles rainbow.
How do plants drink if they don’t have mouths? To answer this question the children pipetted red water into a cup and placed celery into the cup. The next day they observed that the celery had sucked up the red water to the top! They could see the red colouring trail all the way from the bottom to the very top showing how water is taken up through the roots of a plant.
Bottle and Balloon Experiment: The children poured vinegar through a funnel into a bottle. They then placed a funnel inside a balloon into which they spooned baking powder. The balloon was placed over the top of the bottle rim, causing the baking soda to drop into the vinegar. They watched the chemical reactions which caused the balloon to inflate!
Through all these activities the children have had the opportunity to develop their scientific skills, such as planning, observing, recording and predicting, whilst also refining their fine motor skills and social skills such as turn taking and listening to each other. A great week!
