The Little Red Hen at Children 1st @ Toton

When the Little Red Hen had a problem, she was able to call on the children at Toton to come to the rescue. Here’s what happened.

Now the children knew all about the Little Red Hen having read her story and having re-enacted it using props and masks but when they discovered a letter from their curiosity cube, they stopped their play and gathered round to see who the letter was from. After much discussion about how the letter could have got there and why it had been sent, the letter was finally opened and much to everyone’s surprise it was from the Little Red Hen. She was in need of some urgent help as Farmer Pickles was unwell and needed some warm bread to make him feel better again but the Little Red Hen was busy laying eggs so asked whether the children could make the bread on her behalf.

The champion bakers at Toton were keen to help but then the problems started. Unfortunately, the bread recipe and instructions had got muddled up in the post so it was down to us to re-order the instructions using the diagrams as clues as to what would come first. Then we found that the rain had rubbed off some of the letters on our ingredients and all that was remaining on the packaging was the initial letter of the word! What a day! We solved the problem by matching the initial letters to shop labelled ingredients that began with the same letter!

After lots of problem solving, team work and discussion, we were finally ready to make bread! We all learned special kneading techniques as we made the dough and watched the magic yeast work a treat. The bread rose beautifully in the oven. We made two loaves, one for Mr Pickles the poorly farmer and one for our tea which we ate with ‘oodles’ of butter just like the Little Red Hen in the story. Delicious!

The Little Red Hen was so pleased that the children were able to save the day. Well done everyone!
